Bio
Selected by Adelaide with pick 14 in the 2014 National Draft, Jake Lever was initially viewed as a risky selection after missing his entire draft year due to an ACL injury. He quickly dispelled those concerns, displaying maturity beyond his years to become a key pillar in the Crows' defence during their run to the 2017 Grand Final. However, his tenure in South Australia ended in acrimony when he requested a trade home to Victoria immediately following that premiership loss. The high-profile move cost Melbourne two first-round draft picks and sparked a tense public fallout with senior Adelaide figures, placing significant pressure on the young defender to perform at his new club.
After a difficult start at the Demons that included a second knee reconstruction in 2018, Lever eventually formed a formidable partnership with Steven May that underpinned the club's defensive resurgence. Renowned as an elite intercept marker with an exceptional ability to read the flight of the ball, he is best known for peeling off his direct opponent to impact contests and launch counter-attacks. His influence peaked during the 2021 season, where he earned his maiden All-Australian blazer and played a pivotal role in breaking Melbourne's 57-year premiership drought. Now a senior leader, Lever remains the vocal organiser of the backline, continuing to dictate play with his aggressive positioning and aerial dominance.
