Bio
Matthew Owen is a balanced midfielder who developed through the Brisbane Lions Academy pathway and earned a state draft combine invitation in his draft year. A proven performer at underage level, he was an Under-16 All-Australian and Alan McLean Medallist in 2024. Owen stepped up to make his VFL debut for Brisbane in 2025 and continued his progression in the Talent League this season. He represented the Allies at the 2026 Under-18 National Championships, where he kicked a classy early goal in his opening match before a dislocated shoulder cruelly ruled him out for the remainder of the carnival.
Renowned for his high football IQ and neat ball use, Owen is a hard-running prospect capable of winning the football on both the inside and outside. Scouts have praised his ability to dig in to win first possession before quickly spreading into space to link up in transition. As a club academy prospect, the Brisbane Lions hold priority access to him at the national draft and are expected to match any rival bids.
