Recruited from South Adelaide to join the inaugural Adelaide Crows list in 1991, Nigel Smart became one of the club's most durable and versatile figures. While an early pre-season firewalking mishap generated headlines, Smart quickly established himself as a serious footballer, earning All-Australian selection in the club's debut season as a dashing defender. Known for his distinctive hunched running style and ability to read the play, he developed into a utility capable of playing tall or small at either end of the ground. This flexibility proved decisive during the 1998 Grand Final, where he was swung forward to kick three crucial goals, playing a vital hand in securing the club's second flag.

A key pillar of the Crows' success throughout the 1990s, Smart collected three All-Australian blazers and played in both the 1997 and 1998 premiership sides. His longevity was a testament to his professionalism, allowing him to retire in 2004 as Adelaide's games record holder with 278 appearances, a benchmark that stood until eventually surpassed by the midfield stars of the mid-2000s. Beyond the boundary, his articulate nature and business acumen saw him transition effectively into football administration, cementing his status as one of the most significant figures in the history of the Adelaide Football Club.
