Recruited from Bacchus Marsh, Harry "Soapy" Vallence arrived at Princes Park in 1926 and rapidly established himself as one of the most dominant full-forwards of the inter-war period. While his nickname referenced his slippery nature in contests, Vallence is historically significant for revolutionising goalkicking mechanics; in an era where the drop kick was the standard scoring method, he mastered the long, driving punt kick to devastating effect. A superb athlete with a powerful frame and strong hands, he spearheaded the Blues' attack for over a decade, topping the club's goalkicking list eight times and utilising his speed to lead away from defenders with ease.

His tenure at Carlton culminated in the 1938 premiership victory over Collingwood, where he booted four goals to help secure the flag in what was his final season with the Blues before crossing to the VFA. Although he continued to play football elsewhere, his standing at Carlton remains immense. He left the club as its greatest ever goalkicker—a record that stood for decades—and was rightfully named at full-forward in the Carlton Team of the Century, cementing his status as a Legend of the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
