Recruited from North Hobart in 1966, Peter "Percy" Jones became one of Carlton's most enduring and entertaining figures during a golden era for the club. Standing 198cm, he arrived at Princes Park as an understudy to the legendary John Nicholls, eventually developing into a formidable ruckman who could dominate stoppages and drift forward to become a dangerous scoring threat. Known as much for his on-field theatrics and colourful personality as his football craft, Jones was a skilled tap ruckman who formed potent combinations with the Blues' fleet of rovers. His ability to hit the scoreboard was a key weapon; he retired with nearly 300 goals, a high return for a ruckman and a testament to his effectiveness when resting in the forward pocket.

Jones's resume is among the most decorated in Carlton's history, highlighted by four premiership medallions across three different decades (1968, 1970, 1972, and 1979). He played a pivotal role in the high-scoring 1972 Grand Final victory over Richmond, often cited as his finest performance where he shouldered the ruck load almost unchanged. His consistency was rewarded individually with the club's Best and Fairest award in 1973, stepping up as the premier big man as Nicholls' career wound down. He retired as a player following the 1979 premiership triumph and immediately transitioned into the role of senior coach for the 1980 season, cementing his status as a devoted servant of the club.
