Bio
Recruited from Coburg, Robert Walls established himself as a teenage sensation at Carlton, featuring in the 1968 premiership side at just 18 years of age. He evolved into the prototype of the modern centre half-forward, renowned for his strong hands, tactical intelligence, and an uncompromising, often aggressive physical approach. As the structural focal point of the Blues' attack during a golden era, he played a pivotal role in the famous 1970 Grand Final comeback and the high-scoring 1972 premiership victory, eventually earning the club captaincy in 1977.
His departure from Princes Park was abrupt and controversial; midway through the 1978 season, he was cleared to Fitzroy in a swap deal for Peter Francis. Walls immediately assumed the captaincy at the Lions, bringing hardened experience and leadership to the club for two and a half seasons before hanging up the boots in 1980. While his playing days concluded with 259 games, his influence on the game continued for decades through a premiership-winning coaching career and extensive work in the media.
