Bio
Recruited from Tuggeranong in the ACT with pick 79 in the 1994 National Draft, Aaron Hamill initially made his name as a combative forward at Carlton. He became a cult figure for the Blues, playing a significant role in their 1999 finals campaign, but his departure at the end of 2000 remains one of the more significant player movements of that era. Amidst salary cap pressures and seeking a lucrative long-term contract, Hamill requested a trade to St Kilda, a move that left Carlton officials bitter and netted the Blues pick 4 in compensation.
Upon arriving at Moorabbin, Hamill transformed from a talented forward into a spiritual leader, renowned for his physicality and aggression. He played with a battering-ram style, providing a fierce contest in the air and imposing himself physically on opposition defenders to protect younger teammates. His leadership qualities were recognised when he was appointed St Kilda captain in 2003, a role he held until 2006 during the club's resurgence under Grant Thomas. However, his body eventually succumbed to the toll of his uncompromising playing style, with persistent knee and calf injuries severely restricting his output in his final seasons before his retirement in 2007.
