Recruited from Bacchus Marsh after winning a local best and fairest, Alan Bulman was a mobile follower who broke into the Footscray senior side in 1948 following an apprenticeship in the reserves. Standing 188cm, Bulman was tall for the era but was often described as not playing a typical "big man's game," relying on his athleticism to impact contests as a ruck-rover or while resting in a forward pocket. Despite showing promise during his initial season, persistent injuries hampered his ability to hold a regular spot in the Bulldogs' lineup, restricting him to just 32 games across five years. He eventually departed the club midway through the 1952 season to join Coburg in the VFA, later pursuing coaching roles in country Victoria with Stawell and Navarre.
