Stats
Bio
Recruited from local side Doutta Stars, Alan Dale was a strong, bustling centreman who enjoyed a meteoric rise at Essendon. A talented junior who won the inaugural Morrish Medal in the thirds, he debuted in 1950 and immediately cemented his spot, playing in the premiership team that defeated North Melbourne in his first season. Dale remained a prolific vote-getter in the Brownlow Medal over the next two years, known for his rugged ball-winning ability and safe hands rather than speed, but he eventually lost his place to the emerging Jack Clarke. After a two-year stint captain-coaching Wangaratta Rovers, he returned to the VFL in 1956, playing three final games for the Bombers before crossing to St Kilda mid-season to add experience to a struggling lineup.
