Bio
Recruited from Mentone, Alan "Butch" Gale developed into one of the most imposing ruckmen of his era, utilizing brute strength and a fearless nature to establish himself as the spiritual leader of the Fitzroy Football Club. While he often conceded height to opposing followers, Gale compensated with relentless determination and a physical presence that served as a protective shield for the club's smaller midfielders, most notably Kevin Murray. He was a durable competitor who relied on grit rather than polish, rucking virtually unchanged for over a decade at the Brunswick Street Oval.
Gale's standing at Fitzroy was confirmed by his appointment as captain in 1958, a role he held until his retirement in 1961. He led the Lions during their competitive run in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including a preliminary final appearance, and represented Victoria 12 times in interstate football. A member of Fitzroy's Team of the Century, his contribution to the game extended well beyond his playing days through a prominent media career and the subsequent VFL/AFL careers of his sons, Brendon and Michael.
