Bio
Recruited from Hawksdale in western Victoria, Alan Holmes was a versatile defender and wingman who made an immediate impact upon breaking into the Collingwood side in 1973. He found himself thrust into high-stakes football during his debut season, featuring in three finals including the Magpies' Preliminary Final loss to Richmond. Despite this promising start, Holmes struggled to cement a permanent spot in the senior lineup over the following seasons, often battling injury and form to hold his place in the side. He eventually sought greater opportunity by crossing to Fitzroy for the 1977 season, but he managed just one senior appearance for the Lions before his VFL career concluded.
