Bio
A local product from Moonee Ponds, Alan Irwin was recruited from Essendon Juniors and debuted for the Same Olds in 1908. Standing 178cm and weighing a sturdy 80kg, he was a solidly built utility who managed eight senior appearances across two seasons at East Melbourne before crossing to St Kilda in 1910. While his top-level football career was brief and yielded just ten games, Irwin’s legacy is defined by his extensive military service in two global conflicts. A garage proprietor by trade, he put his skills to use during World War I as a Lieutenant in the 2nd Motor Transport Company in France, and later returned to service in World War II, eventually rising to the rank of Major in the Australian Intelligence Corps.
