Bio
Recruited from Glen Iris, Alan Joyce broke into the Hawthorn lineup during the club’s breakthrough 1961 campaign, playing three games in his debut year but missing out on a spot in the premiership side. An undersized ruckman and follower known for his competitiveness, he battled for regular selection over the next few seasons before establishing himself with a career-best 17 games in 1965. Following that season, he departed the VFL to take up a captain-coach role with Preston in the VFA, where he enjoyed immediate success. While his playing career was modest, Joyce is best remembered as a giant of the club off the field, later returning to Glenferrie Oval as the senior coach who guided Hawthorn to premierships in 1988 and 1991.
