Bio
Recruited from Merbein in the Sunraysia district, Alan Mangels arrived at Princes Park in the mid-1970s and developed into a pacy wingman known for his run and carry. Despite possessing genuine speed and skill, he struggled to cement a permanent position in a formidable Carlton midfield that featured some of the club's greatest players. Consequently, while he was a serviceable contributor during a successful era for the Blues, he often found himself on the fringe of selection during finals campaigns and missed out on playing in a senior premiership side.
Seeking greater opportunities for regular senior football, Mangels transferred to Geelong for the 1981 season. The move paid immediate dividends as he enjoyed the most consistent year of his career, playing 24 games and helping the Cats reach a preliminary final in his debut season at Kardinia Park. He spent three seasons with Geelong, providing valuable experience and outside run before finishing his VFL career. Mangels retired having successfully reached the 100-game milestone, a testament to his persistence in an era of limited squad lists and high competition for spots.
