Entering the VFL as a highly touted teenager from Oakleigh Districts, Alan Martello made an immediate impact at Hawthorn, debuting at just 17 years of age. He quickly established himself as a versatile key position player, renowned for his ability to swing between centre half-forward and centre half-back. This flexibility was most famously utilised in his tactical partnership with Peter Knights, where the two would frequently swap ends to unsettle opponents. A strong overhead mark and a reliable kick, Martello became a cornerstone of the Hawks' golden era, playing a pivotal role in the 1971, 1976, and 1978 premiership sides.

Despite his standing at Glenferrie Oval, Martello's tenure at Hawthorn ended abruptly after the 1980 season when he was cleared to Richmond. He brought valuable experience to the Tigers' lineup, featuring in the 1982 Grand Final loss to Carlton before retiring in 1983. While often playing alongside more flamboyant superstars during the 1970s, Martello remains a celebrated figure at Hawthorn as a three-time premiership player who provided essential structural stability during the club's most successful decade.
