Recruited from local western suburbs club Spotswood, Alan McAsey was a capable ruck-rover who tasted senior VFL action with Footscray during the 1958 season. While his time at the kennel was limited to three appearances and two goals, he forged a significant career in the VFA after crossing to Williamstown in 1960. McAsey became a star for the Seagulls, playing in two Grand Finals and earning selection in the club’s Team of the Decade before shifting to country football to captain-coach Finley. A revered figure at his original club Spotswood, where he returned to coach a senior premiership and was inducted into their Hall of Fame, he was also the father of former Sydney Swans forward Darren McAsey.
