Alan McConnell

Recruited from VFA club Preston after originally hailing from Terang, Alan McConnell was a solid defender who played 37 games for Footscray between 1980 and 1982. Arriving at the Western Oval as a mature-age recruit, he provided defensive depth during a difficult era for the club but ultimately struggled to command a regular position in the senior side. While his playing tenure was brief, McConnell forged a significant legacy in coaching, most notably serving as the final senior coach of Fitzroy during the club's heartbreaking 1996 season. He later became a foundational figure at the GWS Giants as the expansion club's first-ever employee, filling numerous critical roles from Director of Coaching to senior coach of their AFLW side.
