Bio
A Castlemaine native whose early footballing path was shaped by RAAF service, Alan McGowan played briefly in the SANFL with Sturt and Glenelg before establishing himself at Melbourne. He broke into the Demons' senior lineup late in the 1948 season, timing his run perfectly to feature in the finals, only for disaster to strike in the Preliminary Final. Reported for attempted striking, McGowan was suspended and forced to watch from the sidelines as his teammates played out the famous drawn Grand Final and won the subsequent replay premiership. A solid utility who could drift forward, he remained a fringe player over the next two seasons before being delisted. Collingwood threw him a lifeline in 1951, but he managed just one senior appearance for the Magpies before a work transfer to Ballarat brought his VFL career to a close.
