Bio
Recruited from the Leopold Football Club, Alan O'Donoghue commenced his VFL career with a single season at Richmond in 1912 before establishing himself as a versatile key-position stalwart for South Melbourne. A strong-marking utility who could operate effectively as a follower or at either end of the ground, he became a central figure for the Bloods during the World War I era. His time at the Lake Oval was defined by two Grand Finals that bookended his tenure: he led the attack as a centre half-forward in the 1914 decider against Carlton, only to taste defeat. However, O'Donoghue secured the ultimate redemption in his final league appearance, shifting to centre half-back to help anchor the defence in the famous 1918 Premiership victory over Collingwood, retiring as a premiership player.
