Bio
Recruited to Fitzroy during the club's winless 1964 campaign, Alan Quaife was a rover and utility who managed a brief VFL career amidst a difficult era for the Lions. He debuted as a 19-year-old in Round 12 and held his place for three consecutive matches against Carlton, Geelong, and North Melbourne, but was unable to cement a permanent spot in a side that ultimately finished the season without a victory. While his time at the elite level was short-lived, Quaife forged a significant and lasting legacy in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). He became a celebrated coach for St Kevin’s Old Boys, guiding them to a Grand Final and promotion in his first season, and later mentored Old Geelong. Remembered in amateur circles as a colourful character—often sporting a distinctive peroxide mullet and a Brisbane Bears jumper at training sessions—he remained a dedicated football servant and was named Senior Citizen of the Year in Dromana for his community work prior to his passing in 2019.
