Bio
Recruited from Leeton in the Riverina, Alan Self joined South Melbourne as a teenager in 1962. Primarily operating as a rover or forward pocket, he joined the club during a lean era but found it difficult to command a regular position in the senior side. Over the course of five seasons at the Lake Oval, he managed sporadic appearances, drifting in and out of the starting eighteen while providing depth for the Swans' midfield rotation. Unable to consolidate a permanent spot, Self departed the VFL scene following the 1966 season to pursue coaching opportunities in country football, including a successful tenure in the ACT.
