Bio
A World War II veteran who served five years with the Royal Australian Medical Corps, Alan Sorrell arrived at Carlton as a mature-age recruit from Melbourne High School Old Boys with virtually no prior football experience. Standing 188cm, he was a considerable physical presence for the era and operated as a ruckman and follower, noted more for his smooth movement and clean hands than the physical aggression typical of the position. He made an immediate impact by debuting in the opening round of the Blues' 1947 premiership season, though he struggled to hold a regular place in the powerful lineup and did not feature in the Grand Final victory. After three seasons at Princes Park, Sorrell crossed to Fitzroy in 1950 for a solitary game, leaving the game as a respected journeyman who successfully transitioned to the VFL elite despite losing his formative years to military service.
