Recruited from Scotch College and the Warburton Football Club in the Yarra Valley, Alan Story was a tall utility whose VFL career was defined by a unique hiatus. He debuted as an 18-year-old in 1932 and played just four games over his first four seasons before returning to the country, where he became a key figure for Warburton during their strong 1930s era. When the local Yarra Valley competition went into recess due to World War II, Story answered the call from a player-starved Hawthorn, returning to the VFL in 1942 after a seven-year absence. Standing 185cm, he provided valuable size and maturity to the Hawks' depleted war-time lineup, rotating through key positions and the ruck for three seasons before hanging up his boots in 1944.
