Recruited from West Preston, Alan Thompson established himself as a versatile key position player for Fitzroy throughout the 1970s. Standing at 193cm, he was often utilised as a ruckman who could drift forward to impact the scoreboard or settle into defence when required. His ability to plug gaps across the ground made him a valuable asset for the Lions, culminating in a standout 1978 season where he finished runner-up in the club champion award and played a pivotal role in the team's finals campaign. Over a decade at the Junction Oval, he proved to be a loyal servant during a period of mixed fortunes for the club, providing structural stability until his retirement in 1979.

Thompson's legacy at Fitzroy extends well beyond his playing days, as he returned to the club in various coaching capacities after hanging up the boots. After guiding the reserves to a premiership in 1989, he eventually took the reins as senior coach following Bernie Quinlan's departure in 1995. Thompson held the difficult position of steering the club through its tumultuous final years in the AFL, carrying the heavy distinction of being the last man to coach the Fitzroy Lions in a senior match before their merger with Brisbane.
