A talented but itinerant small forward, Alan Thorpe played for three separate clubs in a brief four-year stint at the top level, though he is perhaps best known to modern audiences as a founding panelist on the Marngrook Footy Show. Originally a Fitzroy junior who was drafted out of Tatura in the Goulburn Valley, Thorpe was a classy left-footer with a sharp eye for goal, averaging nearly two majors a game during his limited opportunities with Sydney and the Western Bulldogs. He possessed an elusive side-step and natural goal sense, traits that earned him a final contract with Carlton in 1995. Despite electric pre-season form—where he famously booted five goals in a night match—he could not crack the Blues' dominant premiership 22 and was delisted without adding to his senior tally. Post-football, Thorpe became a respected community leader, establishing the Dardi Munwurro Indigenous men’s healing program in Victoria.
