Bio
Selected by Collingwood with pick 2 in the 2005 Rookie Draft, Alan Toovey arrived from Claremont as a raw defender whose determination quickly outshone his technical limitations. While his unconventional kicking style initially drew scrutiny, his blistering closing speed and disciplined checking made him an indispensable component of Mick Malthouse's backline. Toovey solidified his place in the side as a versatile lockdown defender capable of matching up on both small and medium forwards, playing a crucial, understated role in the Magpies' famous 2010 premiership campaign.
A cult figure among the Collingwood faithful, Toovey was affectionately celebrated for his desperate spoiling and ability to recover in the contest when beaten. His durability was tested when he suffered a ruptured ACL on Anzac Day in 2013, but he successfully returned to play consistent football for another three seasons. Toovey retired at the end of 2016 as a premiership player and a highly respected one-club servant who squeezed every ounce of potential out of his athletic gifts through sheer work rate and defensive application.
