Bio
Recruited from local amateur side South Surfers, Alan Welch was a Ballarat-born forward who joined South Melbourne at the dawn of the club's 1930s golden era. He broke into the senior lineup in 1933, the year the famous "Foreign Legion" stormed to the premiership, but despite making eight appearances during that historic campaign, he was unable to force his way into the Grand Final side that defeated Richmond. Welch carved out a niche as a reliable depth player over the next four seasons, often operating in the shadow of legendary spearhead Bob Pratt. He departed the Lake Oval at the end of 1937 and later served his country as a corporal in the Australian Army during the Second World War.
