Bio
Recruited from West Melbourne in the VFA, Albert Gourlay was a defender whose brief VFL career was split between two foundation clubs. He made his debut for Melbourne in 1903, playing three consecutive matches before crossing to Carlton for the 1904 season, where he managed a further three senior appearances that yielded a win, a loss, and a draw. Unable to secure a permanent place in the line-up, he left the league and eventually emigrated to New Zealand to work as a flax cutter. His story ultimately ended in tragedy during the Great War; after enlisting with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, Gourlay was seriously wounded in France and died just ten days prior to the Armistice in 1918.
