Bio
Recruited via a winding pathway through the VFA with Waverley and the Ovens & Murray League with North Albury, Alby Smedts entered the VFL as a mature-age recruit for Footscray in 1976. Standing 184cm, he established himself as a tough, resolute defender who specialised in playing close-checking roles on dangerous opposition forwards. He became a reliable fixture in the Bulldogs' backline for four seasons, offering a no-nonsense approach to the contest and rarely giving his opponent an inch. Smedts crossed to St Kilda in 1980 for the final chapter of his career, but struggled to replicate his earlier form at Moorabbin, managing just 10 senior appearances over two seasons before retiring.
