Bio
A Maryborough native recruited from the Boroondara Football Club, Alby Stamp holds a unique place in history as a foundation player in the VFL's inaugural 1897 season. He broke into a powerhouse Essendon lineup that would go on to dominate the competition's early years, managing to boot a couple of goals as a rotating forward option. Despite his contributions to the club's formative campaign, Stamp struggled to lock down a permanent spot in a squad overflowing with premiership talent and ultimately missed out on selection for the historic first flag. After spending the entire 1898 season out of the senior side, he returned for a brief stint in 1899 before calling time on his VFL career. He passed away in 1971 at the age of 91, remaining one of the last surviving links to the birth of the league.
