Born in Carlton but launching his VFL career with Melbourne after returning from service in the Middle East during World War I, Alec Farrow quickly established himself as a polished and intuitive midfielder. He was renowned for his clean hands at ground level and an uncanny ability to read the play as the ball spilt from packs, skills that earned him selection for Victoria in both 1920 and 1921. After three impressive seasons with the Fuchsias, he was lured to Princes Park in 1922, where he proved a dangerous option forward of centre and featured in a heartbreaking five-point Semi Final loss to Essendon. His career was brought to a premature and unfortunate end early in the 1923 season, however, when a sickening head clash against a Richmond opponent resulted in a severe concussion that forced him into retirement.
