Bio
Born in Colac but recruited from local side Newtown and Chilwell, Alec Mathieson was a wartime recruit whose brief VFL career was defined by immediate impact and military duty. Originally tied to South Melbourne but unable to commit due to shift work, he joined Geelong when the club rejoined the competition in 1944 following a two-year recess. Mathieson produced a memorable debut against Essendon, chasing down defender Duffy Plummer to earn a holding-the-ball free kick and booting a goal with his very first touch in league football. Despite that start on a half-forward flank, he was swung to centre half-back at the first change and spent the remainder of his seven-game stint rotating through key defensive posts. His football journey was cut short by a deployment to New Guinea with the RAAF, where he contracted malaria, though he remained a revered figure at Kardinia Park as the club's oldest living player until his death at age 101.
