Bio
Born Alexander George Merritt, this defender adopted the surname Barlow after his mother remarried during his childhood. Recruited from the Gippsland side Yarram Yarram, he joined a Carlton outfit that was languishing near the bottom of the ladder in the years immediately preceding the club's golden era under Jack Worrall. Barlow managed just 14 senior appearances across three sporadic seasons from 1901 to 1903, failing to register a goal which suggests he was primarily utilised in a deep backline role to stem the flow of opposition scoring. He struggled to cement a regular spot in the starting 18 and departed the Blues just as they were assembling the powerhouse squad that would go on to win three consecutive premierships shortly after his exit.
