Bio
Recruited from Wycheproof in the Mallee, Alex Denney was a blistering athlete who first turned heads as a record-breaking sprinter and Dux at Caulfield Grammar. Standing just 173cm, he utilised his elite speed on the wing for the Magpies, debuting in 1947 as a replacement for the injured Des Fothergill. While his senior career was limited to two seasons, Denney’s connection to Victoria Park was permanent; he married the daughter of club immortal Gordon Coventry during his playing days. He ultimately requested a clearance back to Wycheproof in 1949, where he cemented his legacy as a premiership-winning captain-coach and league Best and Fairest winner in country football.
