Bio
Recruited from Kyneton College, Alex Fraser was a robustly built utility whose promising League career was abruptly effectively ended by the outbreak of the Great War. He broke into the Melbourne side during the turbulent 1914 season, managing ten senior appearances across two years before trading his guernsey for a military uniform in mid-1915. Fraser’s legacy is defined by his extraordinary heroism with the 10th Machine Gun Company on the Western Front; he was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry at the Battle of Messines, where he charged an enemy position alone and continued to fire despite sustaining severe wounds. These injuries prevented a return to elite football, but Fraser later carved out a distinguished career in public service, eventually serving as both a Senator and a Member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly.
