Born in Mount Gambier and educated at Geelong College, Alex McGregor was a distinguished amateur who balanced a brief but memorable VFL stint with a demanding medical career. Recruited from Melbourne University, the classy half-back flanker and centreman was renowned for his intelligence, composure, and ability to read the play defensively. His unique dual qualifications were famously highlighted during a match in 1934 when he spent the half-time break stitching up a deep gash on teammate Rupe McDonald’s nose before running back out to finish the game. McGregor’s playing days were cut short by his professional duties as a Resident Medical Officer and a subsequent role as a ship's doctor, but he eventually returned to Kardinia Park to serve as the club’s official medical officer for nearly a decade.
