Teams

A second cousin of Carlton legend Stephen Silvagni, Alex Silvagni entered the AFL as a mature-age rookie selection for Fremantle after impressing with the Casey Scorpions in the VFL. Establishing himself as a disciplined key defender who prioritised spoiling and lockdown tasks over offensive drive, he became a reliable contributor for the Dockers when fit, most notably executing a critical shutdown role on Geelong's Tom Hawkins during the 2013 finals campaign that led to the club's maiden Grand Final appearance. Despite his defensive utility, persistent soft-tissue injuries frequently interrupted his momentum, preventing him from cementing a permanent spot in the side over seven seasons in the west. Following his delisting by Fremantle, he was handed a lifeline by Carlton to provide experienced defensive cover, but his time at Princes Park was similarly curtailed by injury, eventually forcing his retirement in 2018.
