Recruited from the Richmond reserves and local side Burnley, Alf Benison was a solidly built big man who made his mark during the war-interrupted era of the VFL. Standing 185cm and weighing over 90kg—a significant size for the period—Benison offered an imposing physical presence as a follower and key forward for South Melbourne, where he became a regular fixture in the early 1940s. His career is most notable for an unusual mid-season transfer in 1944; after making just a single appearance for South Melbourne that year, he was cleared to Footscray, where he immediately slotted into the side for the remainder of the season. While his stint at the Western Oval was brief, yielding nine games and six goals, he proved a useful utility before eventually departing the VFL to continue his career with Camberwell in the VFA.
