Bio
Recruited from Sale in the Gippsland region, Alf Chown was a half-forward flanker who broke into the Hawthorn lineup during the 1953 season. He showed promise in the forward half across 12 senior appearances, but his VFL career was abruptly ended by a freak injury off the main stage. Late in his debut season, Chown suffered a severe leg fracture in a mid-week social challenge match at St Kevin's Oval, an incident that ultimately forced him out of League football just as he was establishing himself in the side.
