Bio
A trailblazing figure in VFL history, Alf Egan is recognised as the first known Indigenous player to represent both Carlton and North Melbourne. Recruited from the tiny Western District town of Myamyn, the Gunditjmara man arrived at Princes Park in 1931 and quickly established himself as a versatile key position prospect, standing 191cm and capable of impacting contests in the ruck or at centre half-forward. His time with the Blues was defined by a dramatic call-up to the 1932 Grand Final side to replace the injured Jack Green, where he performed admirably in a heartbreaking loss to Richmond. Egan crossed to North Melbourne in 1934 to conclude his career, adding 15 games to his tally in a struggling lineup before hanging up the boots. Though his playing days were brief, Egan remains an important historical pioneer for Indigenous representation at the elite level.
