Bio
A recruit from Mount Egerton via the Essendon Association, Alf George was a big, burly ruckman who made an immediate impact at league level with his surprising pace and immense strength. He played regular senior football for Essendon between 1906 and 1909, featuring in a semi-final in his debut year, before sitting out of the VFL entirely for the 1910 season. Upon his return with Melbourne in 1911, George quickly established himself as a central figure at his new club, forming a formidable ruck combination with Hedley Tomkins and Bill Hendrie. His standing was such that he was appointed captain-coach in just his second season with the Redlegs, a role he held until mid-1913. After a season coaching North Melbourne in the VFA, George returned to the MCG for one final, injury-interrupted campaign in 1915 before his career was curtailed by service in the First World War.
