Teams

Recruited from Collegians, Alf Gray was a fringe player who found himself thrust into one of the most significant matches of the VFL's formative years. Despite only breaking into the powerful Essendon side late in the 1898 season, the winger was selected for the Grand Final against Fitzroy, lining up on the centre line in the heavy mud of the Junction Oval. After that 15-point loss, Gray struggled to command a position in the "Same Old's" dominant lineup, spending the next three seasons out of the senior team while the club secured the 1901 premiership. He made a brief, one-game return in 1902 but was unable to cement a spot, finishing his career with the rare distinction of having played in a Grand Final despite a career total of just five matches.
