Bio
Recruited from the Sandringham Amateurs, Alf Hedge was a lightly framed but highly skilled wingman and rover who broke into the South Melbourne lineup as the team's only teenager in 1937. Renowned for his accurate kicking and clean ball-handling, he appeared set for a significant career at the Lake Oval, playing 16 games across two seasons alongside club greats like Herbie Matthews. However, his time in the VFL was cut short when difficult work commitments forced him to transfer to Sandringham in the VFA for the 1940 season. His football journey was ultimately superseded by national duty; after enlisting in the RAAF, Hedge was tragically killed in action at age 24 while piloting a bomber over Hamburg during the Second World War.
