Bio
Recruited from Melbourne Grammar, Alf Jackson was a fringe player who managed just 13 senior appearances for Essendon across three seasons between 1907 and 1909. Unable to cement a regular spot in the Same Olds' lineup, he failed to kick a goal during his brief VFL career before turning his attention to military service. His most notable footballing moment actually occurred post-retirement during World War I, where he lined up for the Australian Training Units in the historic 1916 Pioneer Exhibition Game in London. A distinguished officer who served at Gallipoli and Fromelles, Jackson rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was appointed an OBE, leaving a legacy defined more by his leadership on the battlefield than his output at East Melbourne.
