Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Alf McDougall arrived at Fitzroy via North Melbourne in the VFA and immediately found himself in the thick of the league's early action. He made a stunning start to his VFL career, booting two goals in a match-winning debut performance against Carlton in 1898. A versatile forward capable of playing tall at centre half-forward or crumbing in the pocket, McDougall became a mainstay during the Maroons' most successful era. He played in three consecutive Grand Finals, capturing back-to-back premierships in 1898 and 1899, and later secured a lasting family connection to the club when his son, Roy, followed in his footsteps to play for Fitzroy.
