Recruited from the Camden Football Club in the Federal League, a fertile recruiting ground for St Kilda during the 1950s, Allan Callow was a resilient utility who worked hard to establish himself at VFL level. He made his debut in the final round of the 1953 season and spent the subsequent years fighting for a permanent spot in the starting 18, eventually finding his niche alternating between the wing, half-forward flank, and first rover. Callow was highly regarded for his team-oriented approach, a trait formally recognized when he was awarded the club's Most Unselfish Player trophy in 1954. His career was defined by his tenacity; he notably reclaimed his place in the senior side after initially being discarded during the ruthless list cull orchestrated by incoming coach Alan Killigrew in 1956. After a final stint with the Saints, he was cleared to Sandringham in the VFA.
