Recruited from East Sandringham, Allan Harper was a tough, old-fashioned defender who found opportunities limited during his two seasons at Moorabbin. Although he arrived at St Kilda as a high-flying junior forward, he was converted into a backman at senior level, where he became known for his uncompromising attack on the ball. After managing just nine senior appearances and suffering a severe kidney injury that curtailed his 1974 campaign, Harper was cleared to VFA club Dandenong to join former Saints teammate Travis Payze, who had arguably been the catalyst for the move after taking on the captain-coach role there. While his VFL career was brief, Harper carved out a significant legacy in the VFA with Dandenong and later Frankston, earning a reputation across the association as a hard-nosed defender who gave no quarter.
