Recruited from Red Cliffs in the Sunraysia district, Allan Maas was a resilient figure whose football journey was profoundly shaped by his distinguished service in World War II. Before arriving at Arden Street, Maas served with the 2/2nd Australian Pioneer Battalion in the Middle East, where he sustained a severely broken leg during the Battle of Merdjayoun in Lebanon in 1941. Remarkably recovering from the injury and subsequent deployment to New Guinea, he debuted for North Melbourne in 1946 as a 23-year-old mature-age recruit. A solidly built utility standing 180cm, he played a grit-and-grind style of football typical of the post-war era, managing 15 senior appearances over three seasons as the club reintegrated returning servicemen. Following his VFL career, Maas dedicated his life to the veteran community, serving for decades as a State Councillor and district leader for the RSL.
