Family

Recruited from Swan Districts in the WAFL, Allan Sidebottom arrived at St Kilda as a mature-age rookie in 1983, following in the footsteps of his older brother Garry. A capable ruckman who could push forward or drift back, he quickly established himself at Moorabbin, filling the void left by the retirement of Jeff Sarau. His breakout season came in 1984, where his strong overhead marking and consistency saw him finish equal eighth in the Brownlow Medal count, a significant achievement for a ruckman in a struggling side. After representing Western Australia in State of Origin football in 1985, his influence at St Kilda began to wane due to injuries. He made a mid-season switch to Fitzroy in 1987 but managed just a single senior appearance for the Lions before returning to the WAFL to finish his playing days.
