Recruited from Port Adelaide in the SANFL, Allen Hender arrived at St Kilda in 1934 as an experienced campaigner looking to make his mark in the VFL. Standing just 175cm, he was a tenacious half-forward and rover who was brought in as part of the club's strategy to bolster its list with interstate talent. Hender possessed good goal sense and durability, serving as a reliable creative option up the field to support star spearhead Bill Mohr. Despite the Saints enduring a lean period on the field during the 1930s, Hender remained a consistent member of the senior side, missing only a handful of matches across his five seasons before finishing his VFL career at the end of 1938.
